Coaching Staff Winter Session 2020
Andy Murray - Head Coach
The Sea Lions are excited to announce the hiring of our next Head Coach, Andy Murray. Andy has been coaching with us since the fall of 2018 and will move into this leadership role for the upcoming Winter Session.
Andy is a St. Johns native and works as an Educator in the Owosso School System. In addition, he is a former Sea Lion and a former Redwings swimmer. His experience and talent make him the ideal choice to lead our program. We welcome Andy, his wife Ashley and their two daughters Katelyn and Lizzy to our swim family.
Andy will lead a very talented group of coaches. His goals will include creating a season plan with a strong focus on technique development and making sure all coaches are instructing the swimmers in a similar way with a chance to spend coaching time with all swimmers at some point in the season.

Varsity Swim Coach – Owosso High School Girls Team 2016 – present
Named Lansing Area 2nd Team Coach of the Year 2016
Named Lansing Area Honorable Mention Coach of the Year 2019
Managed a team of 20-30 high school swimmers
Middle School Swim Coach – Owosso Middle School – present
Managed a team of up to 45 middle school swimmers
Planned meet lineups and organized practices
Supervised volunteer swim coaches
15 years experience teaching swim lessons, life guarding and managing the St. Johns City Pool and Grand Rapids Aquatic Center.
Lifeguard, CPR, AED and First Aid Certified
Attended Central States and MISCA Swim Clinics
Continuing Education: Started Level 1 USA Swim Certification
Peter Sperry - Assistant Coach
Peter is the current St. Johns High School Girls Assistant coach and former Head Coach of the SJ Middle School team. Peter has been with the Sea Lions for over eight years and continues to be one of our swimmers favorite coaches to learn from. A former Sea Lion and Redwing swimmer, Peter has recently taken a job as Kindergarten Teacher in Dewitt. Peter still holds a few Sea Lions records that he hopes are broken in the near future.
David Pumfrey - Assistant Coach
David is a former Sea Lion and current Ovid Elsie Varsity swimmer. He is a current lifeguard and is our very first coach to enter and compete the Junior Coaching Program. He has successfully completed Level 1 of the USA Swimming program and is officially a USA Swimming Member Coach. Click the link to learn more about our Junior Coaching Program.
Dr. Don Porter - Assistant Coach
The Sea Lions would like to thank Dr.Porter for volunteering his time with us this session. A former college swimmer, this is Coach Porter’s second stint with the Sea Lions and we are very happy he is sharing his talents with us again!
Tess Burnash - Assistant Coach
Tess joins our team after graduating from St. Johns in 2018. A four year swimmer for the Redwings, she was a state qualifier from 2015 - 2018 and was named Captain her senior year. Tess has been involved with the Sea Lions since 2006 (13 years!) competing, life guarding and junior coaching. She has also worked for the City of St. Johns pool programs, teaching swim lessons and life guarding Open Swim for three summers. Her favorite part of coaching is watching the kids work so hard towards a goal and the surprise and joy they have after achieving it. Tess is currently working as a supervisor at NCG Cinemas while pursuing a degree in Sociology at Lansing Community College.
Madi Kotowicz - Assistant Coach
Madi joins the Sea Lions after graduating from St. Johns in 2018. She swam all four years for the Redwings and considers the breastroke her best event. Before joining the varsity team, Maddi swam with the Sea Lions for three years. Her experience in the pool propelled her to three seasons with the City of St. Johns Pool Programs including giving swim lessons, life guarding and she served as the programs manager this year. Her favorite part of coaching is seeing younger kids improve. Maddi is currently pursuing a degree in Art Education at Lansing Community College.
Dr. Tyler Dickenson - Strength and Conditioning
Dr. Dickenson is a St. Johns native and earned a degree in Human Biology while wrestling for Michigan State University. His Healthy Living Nutrition Course, Family Fitness Night, Couch to 5K, Strong Core - Healthy Spine classes have improved health & fitness in our community and we are excited for him to share his talents with the St. Johns Sea Lions.
