A question was posed by a parent of a new swimmer and we wanted to share our response with everyone, in case we had any other new families that might be wondering the same thing.
Do you welcome beginning swimmers at the competitions?
All swimmers are welcomed at the meets and encouraged to sign up. There will be many new swimmers and a swimmer at any level will not stand out for being inexperienced. At our last meet, Charlotte had some very young swimmers in the pool and even had coaches in the pool to assist them. Those are some of the best moments at a swim meet. Additionally, the more swimmers we have at a meet, the more points we have a chance to score! Go Sea Lions!
The more meets they compete in, the more confidence they will gain. After that, they will start seeing improvements in their times and that is when they really start to fall in love with the sport. They can also expect to notice that we are a team, and we cheer each other on no matter how fast you are.
If your swimmer has any worries or hesitation about swimming in a meet, please have them seek out any of our coaches or board members that may be present during their next practice. We would love the opportunity to help them feel more comfortable with it and to explain anything that they may be wondering about.

Also, the deadline is quickly approaching for the Saginaw Invite (Dale Gooding Invitational, Saturday, November 17th). All entries are due this Friday at 6pm. Individual races are $4 and we will be using the new PayPal credit card payment system (check payments will also be accepted). There are no Relays at this meet.
This is our first invitational of the season and a good one to attend as it will be held at Saginaw Valley State University, the site of the State Championships in February. We hope you can attend, car pooling will also be available if any of our swimmers need a ride.

Junior Coaching Program
We are excited to introduce the launch of our Junior Coaching Program. The purpose of this program will be to find and develop strong coaches for the future of our Swim Club. Working with our current coaching staff, our new coaches will have a chance to observe our practices as well as develop their own coaching style.
We envision the candidates for this program coming from current Redwing (and other local High School) swimmers as well as from our own Elite swimmers. In addition to a one season “apprenticeship” type of start, new coaches will also be asked to complete lifeguard training and Level 1 and 2 of the USA Swimming Coaching Certification Program. We believe this will give them the opportunity to succeed as a coach and ensure our swimmers continue to get quality coaching.
We are also excited to introduce our first participant in this program, David Pumfrey. David is a former Sea Lion, a current Ovid Elsie varsity swimmer and has been lifeguarding for us during the current session. During that time, David has proved himself to be someone that does a great job when lifeguarding, has strong knowledge of swimming fundamentals and has a strong desire to succeed at coaching in the future.
David jumped at the opportunity when asked last night and was a big help working with our swimmers on starts and turns in preparation for tonight's meet. He had a great first night and impressed Coach Natalie and our Board Members as well. Welcome to the team David!

Swimmers, Parents and Guardians,
October 1st, 2018
Hello Swimmers & Parents/Guardians,
Sea Lions Team Photo Days
We will be hosting a Team and Individual professional photo shoot on Monday, October 8th and Tuesday, October 9th at 6pm each day. Swimmers are encouraged to attend at least one of the days to participate in the Team Photo (which will be superimposed with all the swimmers!) We planned two days in anticipation of not everyone being able to make a certain day, we know how busy the kids schedules are! Swimmers: please wear your new red Sea Lions shirts over your swimsuits and come to the pool deck without your swim caps on for the photo shoot.
There is no charge to be in the photos, however photo packages will be available for purchase. Please print and fill out the form and send payment with your child to practice on the 8th or 9th. https://www.sjsealions.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Sports-Packages.jpg We can’t wait to see how the photos come out!

Reigning Light Flyback
This year’s suit is the Reigning Light shown above! Different Strokes (Swim supplies company from Livonia) will once again be setting up at the High School on Monday, October 15th from 5:50 - 7:30 pm. Suits will be available to try on for fitting. They will also bring other suits, goggles, etc available for purchase. The team cost for the girls version is $55 and $37.50 for the boys jammer.
As a less expensive alternative or if you are looking for a practice suit, we have discovered a similar suit available on swimOutlet.com. These suits will not be available at the Suit Sale, but if you know the right size, can be purchased online. https://www.swimoutlet.com/searchresults.asp?Search=sporti+streaks&checkRealSearchInput=Y#page=1&search=sporti+streaks&catlvl=1&sortby=Relevance&viewall=no These suits should be fine for meet swimming, but we recommend swimmers don't wear them as often as they will not be the same quality as the Speedo.
Sea Lions Shirts
Did everyone like the new tee shirts? We want to take a minute to thank all of the sponsors that made it possible for us to hand those out to each kid. What a great community we live in!

Hello Swimmers & Parents/Guardians,
We hope everyone is feeling focused and goal oriented after Friday’s Mock Meet. Way to go swimmers! Photos from the event are available on our website under the new Photos tab in a Shutterfly Album. https://www.sjsealions.com/photos/ Please feel free to add any photos you may have taken from the event! Strength and Conditioning
Tomorrow Dr. Tyler Dickenson will be starting his Strength and Conditioning program each Tuesday and Thursday at the pool! The program will have the Advanced and Elite swimmers participate at first with the hope of incorporating some of the Intermediate swimmers who are interested soon. Dr. Dickenson will plan on attending the first two weeks of each new circuit and our coaches will continue the program until the circuit ends. The program will start at 6:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, after the swimmers have had a chance to warm up in the pool. We encourage the swimmers to bring a second towel to dry off prior to the workout.
From Dr. Dickenson: For our first circuit we will be doing 10 stations, 2 times through. The exercises will be performed for 40 seconds and the athletes will have 20 seconds to rest as they transition to the next station. I will run through all of the exercises with demonstration prior to starting the circuit and will be watching everyone to make sure they are executing proper form and technique. While not as exciting, we should keep the exercises relatively basic at first and look to progress down the line. Below is a list of the stations I propose for the first circuit. (Other circuits to follow)
- Plank (core)
- Band Bent Over Row (requires pretty heavy bands) (back)
- Kettlebell Hip Hinge (posterior chain)
- Hollow Holds (core)
- Band Bent Over, Front Lat Pulls (requires medium strength band) (back)
- Dumbbell Goblet Squat (hopefully we can borrow from weight room 15, 25, and 35lbs) (legs)
- Prone Ts and Ys (shoulder health and back)
- Side Plank (20 seconds on left side, 20 seconds on right side) (core)
- Band Shoulder External Rotation (requires a light band) (shoulder health)
- Bird Dog (core)

Lets Go Sea Lions!
September 16, 2018
Dear Swimmers and Parents/ Guardians,
Welcome to the 2018 Fall Sea Lions Swim Season! We have a brand new board this season and we have been busy putting together what we think is our best program in some time. We are excited to let you know about the following changes, improvements, and new ideas:
Please help us in welcoming our new Head Swim Coach, Natalie Longoria! A former Sea Lion and Redwings swimmer, Natalie’s passion for St. Johns swimming is easy to see. As an assistant coach for the last two seasons, Natalie now steps into the role of managing our coaches and lesson plans as well as overseeing the progress of all our kids. We know she will do a great job! Natalie and her husband Mike are proud parents to Sea Lion, Preston Longoria.
We are excited to introduce our new Assistant Coach and Board Member, Andy Murray! Andy has been the Head Coach for the Owosso Varsity Girls team for the past 3 years and the Owosso Middle School Team for the past 5. A former Sea Lion and Redwing swimmer, Andy went on to spend 15 years teaching swim lessons, life guarding and managing the St. Johns City Pool and Grand Rapid Aquatics Center. Andy’s experience will be invaluable to our club as he assists with the weekly training plans and workouts. When he’s not busy coaching, Andy enjoys completing Marathons (3), Half Ironman Triathlons (6) and Ironman Triathlons (3). Andy and his wife Ashley are proud parents to Sea Lion, Lizzy Murray.
Dr. Tyler Dickinson of the St. Johns Chiropractic Clinic has signed on to be our strength and conditioning coach! Dr. Dickenson is a St. Johns native and earned a degree in Human Biology while wrestling for Michigan State University. His Healthy Living Nutrition Course, Family Fitness Night, Couch to 5K, Strong Core - Healthy Spine classes have improved health & fitness in our community and we are excited for him to share his talents with the St. Johns Sea Lions. He is currently working with our coaches on a bodyweight and resistance band program that we will be offered soon during our practices.
We are also very proud and excited to let you know that Assistant Coach Peter Sperry will be returning this season. Peter has been with the Sea Lions for more than five years and continues to be one of our swimmers favorite coaches to learn from. A former Sea Lion and Redwing Swimmer, Peter has recently taken a job as a Kindergarten teacher in Dewitt. Peter still holds a few Sea Lions records that he hopes are broken in the near future.
Rounding out the staff is Assistant Coach Nick Bishop. Nick returns as another former Sea Lion and is a proud parent to Sea Lion Madelyn Sweckard. His favorite part of coaching is watching kids set new personal records!
This season many of our coaches will be working towards USA Swimming and ASCA credentials, and Continuing Education for our all of our coaches will be one of the board’s main goals.
We have been working hard to ensure we have enough swim meets to meet all of our swimmer’s goals. You can check out all our scheduled meets for the fall session at www.sjsealions.com on the new Meet Schedule tab. Our first meet of the year will be a Mock Meet on September 28th. This practice meet will help our new swimmers to get used to competition and for our returning swimmers to establish competitive times to build upon and help them develop goals for the season. We also believe this will be a great opportunity to build team unity and help them learn how to cheer for one another. We hope you can plan to attend. Grandparents and friends are welcomed to cheer the team on! To sign up visit www.sjsealions.com/mockmeet

Board members Chris and Liz both attended the annual Michigan Team Swim League fall meeting and discussed the rules and dates for this year’s season. There will be some new wording for the rules, but most will stay the same. The MTSL rules are now posted on our website and will be updated when the new wording has been written. As in years past, swimmers are required to swim in two MTSL meets in order to participate at the State Meet in February.
State cut times will remain the same and are posted on our website. Swimmers will be required to swim at and meet the qualifying times for the age they are at the state meet. So, if they have a birthday between now and then, keep that in mind.
State Cut Times: https://www.sjsealions.com/results-records/state-times/
Please refer to our online google calendar for practice schedules, meets and updates. We will not be practicing during home football games or home swim meets. https://www.sjsealions.com/team-calendar/
If you are not following us on Facebook yet, please do so. This is often the fastest way for us to get information out and keep our parents/ swimmers updated. https://www.facebook.com/StJohnsSeaLionsSwimClub/
This year’s board is comprised of some very hardworking parents. It has been my pleasure to work with them as we continue to build the program. We hope you have an enjoyable season and that your child/ children have their most successful one as they work towards their goals.
